World Deaf Swimming Championships

6th September 2011

Comments from Coach & Swimmers about World Deaf Swimming.

Rodney Moorehead, Coach

It was a great experience for me to be part of the Irish Deaf Swimming team for the WDSC and I thoroughly enjoyed it.standard of the athletes was very high and I'm sure it gave our two swimmers great hopes of what to aspire to, and aim for in the future. I as a coach also learnt a lot from other coaches on best practise for competitions such as this and I look forward to putting it into action for next time.thought the competition was organised very well and the volunteers that were working were extremely helpful in answering our many questions throughout the week. The only issue we had was transport from our hotel to the pool, but credit to the organisers, once the problem was highlighted it was rectified for the duration of the competition.of the highlights for me was being given the opportunity to meet such a diverse group of people who all had the common interest/passion for swimming. I found the challenge to learn the different signs from various countries, including Ireland, a good experience which I'm sure will benefit me in the future. Thanks to Dee and Nora for being patient with me while trying to get involved with there conversations. I think it got easier as the week went on!two swimmers Eoin and Nora did their country very proud and they were a pleasure to train and watch compete. I'm sure this experience will stand them in great stead for the future and Im sure future success is just around the corner for both. Eoin even with his diet of Kfc and Coco Pops seemed to have that boundless energy that only a 16 year old would have. He competed excellently and you can see he has a great edge for competition which will be a great help for him in future gala's.was like a seasoned pro throughout the week and trained and competed like one to boot and I wish her every success in the future.
So thanks again to Dee and IDSA and I look forward to working with you again in the near future.

Eoin O’Meara, Swimmer

My experience of WDSC (World Deaf Swimming Championship) was a great one. Some of the things I enjoyed was meeting new people and making new friends from around the world, swimming against other countries, swimming for Ireland and swapping items with the other competitors from different countries like Badges, T-shirts (swapped with U.S.A. and Great Britain) and Swim Hats (swapped with Sweden, Australia and got a U.S.A. hat for free).

I also broke all of my personal best time’s for all five events that I swam in which is great for me. I really enjoyed my time being in Portugal, and travelling with the team Dee, Nora and Rodney.

Irish Deaf Sports Association, thank you for selecting me to represent Ireland and would be happy to do it all again.

Nora Duggan, Swimmer

The World Deaf Swimming Championship in Portugal was an unforgettable experience for me. I swam in 4 events- 100, 200, 400 and 800 freestyle and improved my timing but more importantly, it gave me the motivation to work harder, the confidence to do better and the experience I will never forget. Meeting all those swimmers from around the world was fantastic.
It made me feel good that I'm not the crazy one getting up early in the mornings for trainings, that I'm not alone in this. It was also great watching some fantastic relays, one was so close it was unbelievably exciting! Overall, it was an experience I will alwaysremember.

I would like to thank Irish Deaf Sports Association for selecting me to be on the Irish Deaf Swimming Team.
