Irish Deaf Footballers Secure Euro Qualification

14th September 2010

The Ireland Deaf Men's Football team recorded a hard-fought 3-0 victory against their Slovakian counterparts in Bratislava last Saturday to secure a 9-1 aggregate success, thus qualifying for the 2011 European Deaf Football Championships in Denmark next June where they will face 11 rival countries.

This was a great performance by the Irish lads in what was a physical encounter on a difficult playing surface against fired-up opponents.

Slovakia would have hoped for a blistering opening to rouse their large contingent of supporters but instead it was Ireland who made the perfect start with a sensational goal in the second minute. Ireland full-back Paul O'Callaghan received the ball deep inside his own half. He played a one-two with Richard Dougherty before releasing flying winger Mark Sinclair down the left flank. Sinclair passed inside to Joseph Watson whose clever pass sent Sinclair clear to the byeline to deliver a perfect cross into the Slovakian box for the smallest player on the pitch Andrew Wynne who rose superbly to head into the far top corner and put Ireland 1-0 ahead. Slovakia were reeling and Ireland almost scored again when Sinclair narrowly failed to convert Watson's cross along the 6 yard box.

Slovakia did begin to settle and dominated possession over the next 20 mins. Ireland centre-half Roy Mckee recovered from a slip to make a vital block as the Slovakians poured forward and on another occasion the Slovakian centre forward should have done better when firing over the top when well placed.

Having weathered this spell of pressure Ireland began to resume control. Captain Darren Dunne and Eoin Burns were working tirelessly in the central midfield area winning numerous tackles against more physical opponents with Wynne and substitute Jason Maguire who replaced the injured Sinclair looking threatening on each flank. On the half-hour mark Watson created an opening for Maguire who volleyed narrowly wide and moments later the same two players combined again with Watson unlucky to see his shot from 12 yards rebound off the post with the keeper well beaten. Dunne almost registered a wonder goal in the 41st minute when his shot from 35 yards produced a great save from the Slovakian Keeper - Jonathan Crosgrove heading over Maguire's resulting corner leaving the half-time score 1-0 to Ireland.

Ireland made a powerful start to the 2nd half, knocking the ball about with purpose and stretching the Slovakian defence repeatedly. After 48 mins a fantastic pass by Damien McMahon started a move which saw Cosgrove's cross hammered against the post by Wynne as luck again deserted the Irish. Seconds later Watson went on a mazy run beating 4 Slovakian defenders but seeing his classy chip bounce just the wrong side of the post. As the pressure continued to mount Cosgrove headed just over from a Watson cross with Maguire similarly unlucky from Cosgrove's cross. The second goal was only a matter of time in coming and duly arrived in the 66th minute. Cosgrove capitalized on a defensive error and his low cross was expertly converted at full stretch by Watson to put the Irish 2-0 ahead.

In a rare attack by Slovakia, Dougherty showed tremendous pace to make a superb tackle inside his own box at the expense of a corner which proved fruitless. Most of the action was at the other end however, Watson flashing a free-kick just wide and a couple of great corners from Wynne causing havoc in the Slovakian box. The scoring was completed in the 78th minute when substitute Colm Keogh played an excellent pass down the left flank allowing Watson to cut inside from the sideline before producing another excellent finish into the bottom corner putting his team 3-0 ahead.
In the remaining minutes Slovakia produced a late flurry, hitting the crossbar in the 86th minute and forcing Irish Keeper Michael Walsh into a fantastic double save two minutes later to preserve a clean sheet for the Irish and leave the final score: Slovakia 0 Ireland 3 (1-9 Aggregate).

Ireland Keeper Walsh was assured throughout. McKee and Dougherty were resolute at the heart of the defence with full-backs O'Callaghan and McMahon performing very well. Dunne and Burns are developing a great midfield partnership and dominated exchanges. On the flanks Wynne gave everything for the cause and was involved in most of Ireland's best moves whilst Sinclair started the game very well before injury forced him off. Cosgrove overcame a quiet opening to produce a very creditable 90 mins whilst Watson was on top form throughout, at times he was simply unplayable for the Slovakian defenders.
Early substitute Maguire had an excellent game and aged 18 he is a tremendous prospect. Keogh also did very well when he entered the action with Kevin Dudley also showing some nice touches as well as gaining international experience when he made a substitute appearance.

Ireland manager Rino Giglione was pleased with the Irish performance.
"This was a test of our character today but the lads worked hard, they kept focused on the game, defended well, created chances and scored 3 excellent goals. We also have areas of our game we need to work on but we take a lot of positives from the match".

Ireland Director of football Sean Herlihy also praised the attitude of the players.
"We look forward to the finals in Denmark with confidence" he commented "and "no stone will be left unturned in ensuring the best possible preparation for team". Herlihy also paid tribute to IDSA for all their support as well as thanking the FAI for their assistance in developing deaf football in Ireland. Special mention was also reserved for team sponsors and to Bewley's hotel for their helpfulness in assisting preparations.
