Ireland Deaf Futsal: Final Report

15th December 2010

Written by Ciarán Moloney

Having entered a men's team into the recent 3rd European Deaf Futsal Championships which took place in Switzerland from the 5th to 15th November, captain Paul O'Callaghan and his team-mates repaid IDSA's faith in them with a credible 6th place finish out of 26 countries which was made all the more impressive when you consider they finished a lowly 17th out of 20 teams in the 2007 World Deaf Futsal Championships in Bulgaria.

The boys in green had the incredible fortune to have two highly experienced futsal coaches at the helm, Brazilians Gleudson Junior Da Silva and Anderson Nunes. Their input proved to be invaluable as the Irish recorded impressive victories in their group matches over Belarus and Cyprus, winning 8-5 and 12-0 respectively.

This was enough to see them progress onto the elimination stages where they faced Belgium in which the stakes were high. Not only was a place in the quarter final up for grabs, the victorious team would also automatically qualify for the 2011 World Deaf Futsal Championships. Inspired by the devastatingly in-form Joe Watson, the boys in green put in a stellar performance as they took the game to the wire. With nothing to separate the two sides at full time with 7 goals apiece, extra time played was played but victory could not be claimed as the final scoreline stood at 10-10, meaning a penalty shootout was then in order.

The penalty shootout was just as dramatic as the match itself. With the score being 4-4 in Ireland's favour after the Belgian captain saw his effort beaten out by goalkeeper Ciarán Moloney, the responsibility of the last kick went to Sean Young. In the face of intense pressure, the 16 year old displayed a cool composure beyond his tender years as he sent his first touch of the ball of the entire game into the bottom corner of the goal, drawing a final conclusion to what was arguably the most entertaining game of the entire championship.

However the Irish could not sustain such intensity in the following match against the Russians, succumbing to their effective combination of experience and fresh legs in the quarter finals as the match ended 13-5 in favour of our Baltic neighbours. However all was not lost as the Irish went on to defeat Switzerland 8-4 after extra time before facing Turkey in which once again, they were unfortunately at the wrong end of a 9-1 scoreline. Upon arrival in Dublin airport, Irish goalkeeper Ciarán Moloney lauded the efforts produced by all in the Irish camp, "the attitude shown by lads was fantastic, our spirited performances gave us a lot of confidence throughout the tournament. To go from finishing 17th out of 20 teams to 6th out of 26 teams in the space of three years is amazing progress and gives me great pride to have been involved in this team. Thanks must go to our coaches Anderson and Junior who were instrumental."?

The futsal squad would like to take this opportunity to thank the following organisations and people;
DSA, ISC, DDA, MDSC, LDSC and CDSC for their sponsorship,
FAI for supplying gear,
Seán Herlihy of IDSA for his hard work.
Ciaran Moloney for match & article reports.
Sporting Fingal Futsal players for their assistance in training.
St Joseph's School for the use of their sports hall.

FAI Establishes an Inclusive Supporters Club (FAIISC)

15th December 2010

The Football Association of Ireland, through their Football For All programme has established a new supporters club in partnership with all disability governing bodies throughout the country. The FAI’s Football for All programme supports in excess of 3,900 players nationwide every year in cooperation with our programme partners, Special Olympics Ireland, Association of Irish Powerchair Football, Football for All Schools, Irish Deaf Sports, Irish Blind Sports, Cerebral Palsy Sport Ireland, Irish Wheelchair Sport, National Learning Network / Rehab Care, Street Leagues Ireland, Down Syndrome Ireland, Dyspraxia Ireland, Acquired Brain Injuries Ireland/Headway and Amputee Ireland. The Football for All programme improves opportunities for players with a disability to enjoy football at over 40 venues throughout the country.

The FAI is keen to ensure the Irish football experience at the Aviva stadium is available to all. The stadium takes centre stage among Europe’s stadia in regards to access ensuring all supporters can receive the same great experience at any event they attend. Having the ability to offer such an experience to all Republic of Ireland supporters, FAIISC has been established. This new affiliate of the ‘Boys in Green’ aims to represent Irish supporters with disability views, issues and concerns within the Aviva stadium and the FAI.

The key objectives of FAIISC are:
· To be a voice for Irish fans with a disability
· To enrich the experience of Irish fans with a disability at the AVIVA stadium
· To raise disability awareness
· To be a source of information on access to AVIVA stadium for its members

Any revenues from the inclusive supporters club will go towards the funding of our extensive football for all programmes working with 12 disability groups and enable 3,900 people with disabilities every year to participate in our sport. Since the Football for All programme was started by the FAI, more than €2m has been spent by the Association in this area.

National Coordinator of the Football For All programme with the FAI Oisin Jordan commented
"The establishment of a supporters association for fans with a disability was an idea we have worked to develop with our disability group partners for the new AVIVA stadium. The FAIISC will ensure our existing fans with disabilities receive an unforgettable experience at the home of Irish football and will also encourage new fans with disabilities to become involved”.

David Glynn Chairman of FAIISC and Irish Blind Sports member:
"On behalf of the committee I would like to thank the FAI, in particular Oisin Jordan, for taking the opportunity to recognise the need for improved access to International games. It is a new era for the FAI and the AVIVA Stadium and we are delighted to be a part of this. We hope that by setting up this group it will revolutionise the way people with a disability follow the Ireland International team not just by attending games but by meeting people in a similar situation. The FAI have really made an effort to recognise each section of our group and combat the difficulties previously faced by attending football games"

Joyce Cook, CAFE (Centre for Access to Football in Europe)Managing Director said:
“We congratulate the FAI and its disabled supporter representatives in the Republic of Ireland for establishing the new FAI Inclusive Supporters Club. It’s been a pleasure working with everybody in setting up this new national group which will only help to improve the situation for Irish disabled fans both at home and internationally. Everyone at CAFE looks forward to our continuing friendship and co-operation with all involved.”

FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney said, “One of the priorities of the Association once we moved to Aviva stadium was the founding of a supporters’ club for people with disabilities. We now have this new fantastic home and it is important for it to be accessible to everyone and for everyone to have a positive experience on match days.”

Mary Hanafin TD Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport said
"I would like to congratulate the FAI on this extremely worthwhile initiative. Everyone involved with Sport shares the same objective of equal access for all supporters. Supporters of the Irish International Football team who attend the Aviva Stadium will now be able to share in the wonderful atmosphere that the home crowd generates confident in the knowledge that their needs will be looked after."

Fans with a disability interested in becoming members of FAIISC can do so by completing the application form that can be found on the home page of the FAI website www.fai.ie. If members want to purchase a season ticket for the AVIVA details can be found on the application form.

Match Reports for Ireland Deaf Futsal againist Belarus & Cyprus

10th November 2010

Competing in the European Deaf Futsal Championships for the first time, the Irish Deaf Futsal team have emerged as dark horses with wins over Belarus and Cyprus in their first two group games.
With qualification to the knockout stages already guaranteed, the boys in green take on Holland today in their final group match. Already they have served their country magnificently and have been a great source of pride for those who follow the team.

Ireland vs Belarus: 8 - 5
Throughout a tough opening game versus Belarus, the boys had their fans biting their nails in what proved to be a very difficult test. Despite falling behind twice during the game, we kept our nerve and it was only in the last few minutes of the game that we pulled away by three goals to gain maximum points. After the match, Captain Paul O’Callaghan praised his teammates, complimenting them on their work rate and the fact they never lost focus of the job at hand.
It was very tough in the first game with Belarus. It was nerve-wrecking during the whole game. Lads managed very well. Captain Paul O’Callaghan commented it was very tough game and great team to work together, kept focus on with lots of pressure during the whole game. When it came up with losing score 4-3 then finding it difficult to beat until the last 10 minutes before it’s over we finally beat with 8-5.

Ireland vs Cyprus: 12 - 0
The Irish recorded their first ever clean sheet in competitive futsal as they ran riot in their second group game against Cyprus.
The Cypriots were no match for the fighting Irish who maintained a intense pace from start to finish with Joe Watson, a junior international player, grabbing a haul of 7 goals.
In his post match analysis, coach Gleudson Junior was upbeat about the performance, complimenting the lads on the control they exerted over the game, “We were very patient and we took our chances very well. When the score was 7-0, it afforded me the opportunity to rotate the players to prevent injuries and also to provide our other players with some valuable international experience.” The Brazilian also praised the lads on their attitude and discipline in the manner in which they recorded a clean sheet without picking up any bookings and stated that he “was eagerly anticipating tomorrow’s final group match against Netherlands “which will bring the group stages to a conclusion and determine who they face in the next stage.
