IRELAND DEAF FOOTBALLERS IMPRESS IN WARM-UP MATCH

Immaculate FC 0 - 2 Ireland

The Ireland Deaf Men's football team continued their preparations for their forthcoming European Deaf Championship qualifier with a friendly match in Belfast last Sunday. The Irish lads produced an impressive showing to defeat top Junior side Immaculata FC. The victory was all the more note-worthy given that Immaculata have only lost 2 matches in 3 years and have averaged 6 goals per game this season. At times the Irish produced good football whilst on other occasions they showed admirable resilance and battling qualities which auger well for the future.

Ireland started a little nervously with the new look defence of McMahon, McKee, Dougherty, Keogh and keeper Keating under pressure to withstand the early Immaculata attacks. The Irish began to settle with Dunne playing intelligent possession football in midfield enabling wingers Wynne and Sinclair to push forward down the flanks. Burns excelled in closing down his opponents space while strikers Watson and Cosgrave looked dangerous each time Ireland attacked. Watson's clever pass put his strike partner through on goal in the 9th minute only for the shot to be blocked while Cosgrave was also unlucky to see his lob shave the crossbar minutes later. At the other end Keating did well to deal with a couple of dangerous crosses. Ireland produced a fantastic move in the 24th minute, McKee cut out an opposing attack and fed Dunne who slipped the ball to Cosgrave, the big striker played a clever pass to Wynne who accelerated to the byeline and produced a great cross which Watson met with a superb volley that just shaved the wrong side of the upright. There were further chances for Sinclair and McKee before Ireland deservedly took the lead in the 42nd minute through Wynne's ice cool penalty following a hand ball to make the half-time score 1-0 to Ireland.

The second half began in similar fashion with Ireland on top. Watson's mazy run was only blocked by a desperate goal line clearance, Dunne saw his snapshot flash wide and Substitute Maher had a decent shout for a penalty turned down. The clinical second goal arrived midway through the half when substitute Dudley showed terrific alertness in the box to control the ball and fire into the bottom corner from 12 yards after Sinclair's shot had rebounded off the post. Although 2-0 ahead Ireland faced some late pressure as Immaculata attacked in droves trying to defend their proud unbeaten record. The Immaculata centre-forward looked likely to score as he raced clear in the 80th minute but replacement keeper Walsh produced an awesome save low to his right to prevent a certain goal. Maguire, Corcoran and Lewis also entered the fray and made telling contributions as Ireland held out for a 2-0 success at the full-time whistle.

Joint manager Giglione was pleased with the performance. 'We played some good stuff and take a lot of positives away from the game. We also have a few things to work on but overall it was a very useful workout'.

Ireland Deaf Football director Sean Herlihy was happy with the full weekend training camp and expressed thanks to everyone who contributed to its success, particularly the players who showed great attitude throughout.

Message from Men's Football Director:

Re: Change from League format to knock-out format for championship.

My apologies for the delay in confirming the structure of play this Easter. It has to be said that this is the most difficult decision I have ever made in my role as Football Director. I am sure you all were wondering why changes have been made very close to the tournament. This decision was made after consulting my football sub-committee and RC football Managers, the main factors that led to this decision was the weather and injuries also the clubs of some of the players expressed their concern for the players welfare.

There will be 2 matches to be played on Saturday and none on Sunday. There will be International training session on Sunday and open to all supporters to watch the sessions. This will be good preparation for the Slovakia game which we need to win! Hopefully this will pull in the crowds.

Fixture for 38th Inter-Pro

Saturday at 11am
Ulster V Leinster at Watershed Pitch
Munster v Connacht at Astro Pitch

Saturday at 3pm
3/4 place at Astro Pitch
Final at Watershed Pitch

18 players on squad – one hour KO to finalise the squad by RC manager.
35 minutes each half

Hope you all support this with best interest for our player’s welfare.

Report:

Departed Dublin at 6.30am to Manchester airport (Aer Lingus) and waited for less than one hour for a train from Manchester airport to Sheffield. Got on another train from Sheffield to Loughborough. Taxi from Loughborough station to University pool.

We had our lunch in the university and went to the pool at 1.30pm for 10 minutes but we have to leave again before we allow to return back for 2.30pm.
Paul got a phone call from Manchester airport saying that they have one of swimmer passport. Paul and Caroline tried to sort out while I stayed with the swimmers trying to keep them cool and focus on their preparation for the gala. Paul left in a taxi to Manchester airport.

Irish swimmers had a warm up swim at 2.45pm for half an hour then the gala started. It became chaos, as the starter progress was not Deaf friendly. Referee blows whistle then put his hand up means swimmers are to stand on the blocks then 2nd whistle means put head down and turn left to watch the flashing light (it was so weak!).

All swimmers became confused and took a while to get into a clear understanding among swimmers. Catherine White came to the pool to see us as a supporter as she lives 15mins away on train from Loughborough. We end up having her as an interpreter throughout the gala, for which we were so grateful. Most swimmers don’t sign and Vincent Dickson, British Deaf Swimming Director said that they all are from mainstreamed schools. There was a GB swimmer, Jennifer Leith with 48d hearing loss and she won most races.

However, the Irish Deaf swimmers were frustrated at the beginning so I had to work on getting their confidence back. They gradually calmed down and adapted in their swimming events.

We had no interval as it was stated on the programme. The gala ended at 5pm and the Irish Deaf swimmers wanted to do some swimming so I asked Vincent. He was impressed and said go ahead.

Handing out medals started at 5.45pm and we were lost because of the hearing speaker and only one officer doing signs of swimmers’ names in BSL. Catherine White kindly interpreted for us throughout the awarding of medals. We were so happy in gaining thirteen medals in total. We were all confused about commemorative medals and became clear when Catherine White explained about the categories.

We were so excited with a total of 13 medals being awarded to our swimmers, Nora (7 medals), Roy (3medals), Karen (2medals) and Jamie (1medal).

Those who didn’t get the medals, Eimer, Emma and Philip did very well in gaining personal best in their swimming times.

Caroline booked two taxis for us at 6.20pm to get 6.45pm train in Loughborough station to East Midlands airport. Paul waited for us at the station with tickets ready for us. We had dinner in East Midlands airport. The plane departed at 8.30pm and arrived back Dublin safely with many supporters (parents, siblings and IDSA president, Kevin Lynch). We were surprised and delighted.

As IDSA Swimming Director, I would like to thank Paul Ryder for his excellent support in making the trip and gala go smoothly. It was a pity that he missed the gala due to travelling to Manchester airport and back for the passport. He was looking forward to the gala. Also thanking Caroline Haran for her support in talking on the phone with Manchester airport staff about passport.

Lastly, I would like to say ‘Thank you’ to IDSA President, Kevin Lynch for turning up at the airport at 5am to wish the team all the best and congratulating the swimmers when we landed Dublin at 10pm.

It was an awesome experience for the swimmers and motivated them to continue to do more swimming training.
Thank you for letting me organise the first International swimming gala for the Irish Deaf Swimming team.

Caroline said
“Experience as a parent travelling to UK, we met at the airport in the early hours 5am, everyone arrived on time and proudly wearing their green hoodies which displayed the Irish Deaf Sports Association logo. Everyone was full of the excitement and eager to get going.

The travel plans were very well organised before the event, with all times of trains, planes etc.. having been very well researched and booked. We travelled with Aerlingus to Manchester airport, and I must say well done to the crew on the plane who took the time to enquire if the group had understood the safety message for the flight. No such service was offered by Ryanair who we returned with.

The young people spent the journey sharing stories and playing card games. We arrived in Loughborough for the gala early and took time to relax with Deirdre entertaining with stories from school etc, which the young people thoroughly enjoyed. The young people are to be commended on their attitude and behaviour on the trip, they were a pleasure to be with and very well mannered. The swimmers worked fantastic together as a team, supporting each other and each taking part to 100% capacity. No easy task especially with the way the event was so disorganised. It was a proud moment to be Irish and a parent and to see the strength in the young people. A big Well Done..

Paul said
"It was worthwhile to worked hard with organised the trip for development swimming team and those trip was worth it for young swimmers. Only Nora has experience with 50m pool but it was other their 1st experience. They now know what it likes and I believe they will go on to work hard for the future. Well done to all swimmers and I never knew what to expected from them but they return back with 13 medals, which make me a happy day!"

Congratulations to the Irish Deaf Swimmers and we, IDSA are so proud of them.
Deirdre Byrne-Dunne,
IDSA Swimming Director.
