IRELAND DEAF WATERPOLO TRAINING CAMP AT UL, LIMERICK
10 August 2009
Liam Moloney:
This UL training camp weekend appeared to be remarkable and positive for the Coach, the players and everybody involved with us.
At the seminar, Coach instructed us with basic 'defence' and 'attacking' tactics on the
whiteboard which was vitally knowledgeable for us in water polo terms. Coach went over explaining and it again and again to make it clear for everybody, and answering questions from us.
This was a good weekend, Thanks to IDSA for covering all our funds for whole weekend.
Philip Culhane:
I would love to say that the Irish Deaf waterpolo team always have good teamwork ethic. I’m afraid not, it was probably our biggest weakness in the past until a firefighter David came along.
Before Dave the coach, we were highly hostility with each other when a player missed a shot or did not come back when we lose the ball and so on. Oh my god, the grilling from each others so bad that some of players were afraid to shoot. Dave managed to cut that out and if he catches anyone giving out to a player, he would take out the griller out of the pool right away. He taught us not to lose faces in the pool and respect each other more.
Over the weekend the Irish Deaf Waterpolo team went to a boot camp in Limerick where the Munster Rugby team trains. It was hard, in three days, we managed to train 9 hours in the pool and 3 hours with Dave and his black board. Dave was trying to mode our brains with the 7 meters drop. It seemed easy when Dave explained ‘the drop’ method on the blackboard but when it came to practical in the pool, it wasn’t that easy in the beginning. With many practices with the 7 meters drop tactic, the polo players began to get the feel of it. We are not all there yet but I’m confidence that we will get it right in time before Deaflypmics.
Vincent McArdle:
The limerick weekend was not just a time for all of the team to get ourselves in shape, we got much more than that. We learned more about one another, the coach got to know us better like we got to know him better. It was a great opportunity for us all to have more than just a few hours together as a team before we go away.
We worked on tactics, passed and swam as a team as well as staying together as a team over the weekend. It was a a good way to know where we were at individually as well as a team relatively speaking. I don't think any of us realsed how useful the weekend has been before we went, not to play a friendly or some touranment away from home but to train, to work together over a period.
It could make all the difference in how we do in the deaflympics. And also i was grateful to have some hours over there for some swimming training for myself.

IRELAND DEAF WATERPOLO TRAINING CAMP AT UL, LIMERICK
9th March 2009
IRELAND DEAF WATERPOLO NEWS
TRAINING CAMP AT UL, LIMERICK
28 February – 1 March 2009
IDSA Waterpolo Director, Seán Herlihy reported;
It was an extraordinary weekend at University of Limerick, with their state of the art facilities also we trained with one of best Waterpolo team in Ireland, Half Moon.
It was long weekend for all the players, activities included gym sessions, training with balls, match against Half Moon, and team meeting and fitness test on Sunday morning. Everyone performed very well and all the players seemed enjoyed in the every minute which it was very important. We also discussed our long term plans for when the water polo season is over in April. We started with our daily programme and there will be three times a week training from end of April.
I want to thank everyone who was involved this weekend especially all the staff at UL Arena and Castletroy Park Hotel. I hope we will train there again during the summer, we definitely would love to!
GYM, TRAINING AND FITNESS TEST by Liam Moloney
The venue was at the Castletroy hotel - with a nicely fully equipped GYM with good facilities. The lads launched the scheme by going to the GYM in the afternoon, with the allocation of Gary Fitzgerald (Fitzer's son)- an exceptional fitness coach to our benefit.Gary started by demonstrating us the basics to advanced of yoga-like stretching which was essential for us, we all found it interesting, especially with the unique types of method for stretching in different bodily areas, Also with the aid of the 'Gym ball' - this turns out to be the best thing to improve bodily performance with your own body balance as they say. As well as 'pull ups'. In addition he explained what we should do before/after training/matches; - to stretch! Otherwise there will be a contraction for players. In the evening we hit the swimming pool in UL with the Half Moon squad for an estimated two hours, both the team did lengths, up and down the pool with basic ball-work and sprinting, etc Then about an hour later we played a match against the gladiators (Winners of the Irish Senior Cup 2008), which was a good test for us. We did really well in the first quarter, our team spirit was high, shortly thereafter the tempo started to decrease after the second quarter as some of us were leaking some fuel and some ran out already! However the coach was contented with our performance. The next morning there was a fitness test in the UL's 50m pool with Half Moon in one lane and with the Irish Deaf team in the other, a quantity of us had a encounter with the Half Moon players to see if we could keep up with them doing the lengths up and down the lane. It was one good challenge for us, and nice way to finish the scheme.
Paul Ryder, team captain’s report:
I'm delighted to say that there is some progress made since our last training camp at Galway. All players are playing with hearing clubs since last September and their standard have been improves but the fitness need to be improve if we want to win Gold Medal!! Dates for swimming session have been told and they will work hard to improve their fitness in the next coming months.
I want to thank to our Director, Seán Herlihy, for origination fantastic training camp at UL & Hotel at Limerick. Also, would like to thank to Alan Ward, UL pool manager, for booking the pool for Irish Deaf Waterpolo team and Gary Fitzgerald, personal trainer, for gave us the advice how to use the weight at gym.
The meeting was held at Castletroy Hotel on Sunday morning at 9.30am. Our Director, Seán Herlihy, gave us a presentation about latest news with 21st Deaflympics (hotel, waterpolo match fixture, and date for flight to Taipei etc), fund raising and training plans. Seán is happy with the progress for fund raising but all players are acknowledge that we will need to do more fund raising to cover our expenses for trip to Taipei and cost for gym/pool for training in the next coming months.
Then, Seán left to all players to discussing with fund raising planning. It was agreed by players that we will do Race Night on May/June and we are going to invite Irish Deaf Badminton & Swimming to join with us. Another idea was mention at the meeting, we will be doing Bag Packing and it will be organising by Philip Culhane.
